GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Run privately by Kasanka Wildlife Conservation Ltd on behalf of Zambia's National Parks and Wildlife Service, Kasanka National Park is one of the most attractive parks in Zambia, with a diversity of dry and wetland habitats and their associated wildlife. The 470 km park lies along the south-eastern edge of the Lake Bangweulu Basin in gently undulating country covered by miombo woodland and extensive papyrus and reed beds. Water, I the form of the Luwombwa and Mulembo rivers and the Kasanka stream, as well as lakes, lagoons, marshes and seasonal pans, is abundant. Many mammals are supported in this environment, and situating, puku, elephant, hippopotamus and crocodile are of particular interest. There are plans to establish a core population of the endangered black rhinoceros here. The birdlife is very varied and, among the many waterbirds, includes such species as the shoebill. This area also has one of the highest densities of the pennantwinged nightjar that the authors have encountered on their travels through Africa. Location: Eastern Zambia; north-east of Lusaka. Access: From Lusaka take the main road towards Mpika; after 450 km turn towards Samfye and drive 54 km to the park's entrance. Accommodation: Lake Wasa Safari Camp is a private camp for up to 10 persons. Luwombwa River fishing Camp at present has only a 4-bed chalet, but a camp for up to 20 is due for completion shortly. Other facilities: A 200-km network of game-viewing roads; guided walks; fishing; boats can be hired. Open: Throughout the year. Beware: Malaria.
